Focusing the lens

As we walk this road toward living lightly on this earth, an analogy that comes to mind is a trip to the optometrist. You know when they move that lens and ask which is better or worse? Basically, which one can you see more clearly through? And each turn gets a little closer to 20/20.

That is what it is like to begin to see some things that - until now - have seemed so much a part of life we didn't even notice them. Then we say, "Hey, there is another way to do this!" Whether everything is really blurry and you are just starting to be aware of certain environmental issues and making some small lifestyle changes, or perhaps things are getting clearer and you are moving beyond personal changes and into the world of activism and eco-justice work - what matters is that we are looking and noticing and paying attention.  We all start from wherever we are with whatever we know.

My lens has been fine tuned even more lately, with a solid look at plastics. (Beyond all that I already knew, indeed there is so much more to know!) Oh plastic, you are everywhere. And you have done some good. Please don't take this personally, plastic, (or maybe you should), but it is time to part ways, break up and say adios. Since we won't be parting ways with you in the big areas where you do serve us well for now (in the medical world, in airplanes, cars, appliances, etc.) what is long overdue is bidding farewell to single-use plastic.

Lent has begun, and for those of you that observe Lent, perhaps you can join me in a detailed look at plastic in our lives (and in our oceans!) and as this aptly titled article states "Why Give Up Chocolate for Lent When You Can Give Up Plastic?". You do not have to be Catholic or Christian or religious at all to play along. Plastic is non-denominational!
